Non-Traditionally Masculine Folk on the TV

I've been enjoying the recent visibility of non-traditionally masculine people on TV lately - especially as other than the butt of jokes. We have Dani, the boi-ishly cute firefighter on A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila on MTV (which is exactly the sort of silly show that can suck this blogger in with a friend and a bottle of wine), who has made it to the last two contestants, and thus is obviously a serious contestant - and certainly wasn't singled out or derided for her masculinity by the other contestants in the few episodes I've seen.

We also have Julie Goldman as a cast member on The Big Gay Sketch Show on Logo, which is a bit of a reversal of the normal portrayal of butch lesbians in comedy - normally, butch lesbians are the object used in jokes, not the ones making them. There seem to be plenty of sketches that either play up her masculinity while keeping her as a subject, or, just have her, as her usual self, representing lesbians without making her gender variance the joke.

It's exciting to see someone who's quite a bit butch be part of a comedy team (even if only on a channel and show by and for LGBT people), and especially exciting to see a gender variant dyke viewed as a serious dating prospect on a show aimed squarely at a young, mainstream demographic.

There are video clips from and interviews for The Big Gay Sketch Show on Logo's website here.
